Final Blog extra credit

Our company More Protein aims to provide environmentally sustainable protein bars with a higher level of protein to people in need around the world.

Our team is Hap, Zack, and Ben

Our main beneficiary is our people with a lack of nutrition. We are catering to multiple markets. I will categorize our market as so: market one is someone in a developed country that has bad or wants to improve their nutrition and also wants to be environmentally conscious and wants to buy a product that helps the environment as well as their own health. Market two is someone in a developing country who is struggling to survive because of a lack of nutrition (in this case the bars are free).

The benefit in case two doest that they have many options as food is generally hard to come by, most of these people will leave and become refugees or become part of the 828 million people that go hungry yearly. In the case of our first market in a developed country we would sell in the US which has around 44 million people suffering from malnutrition each year.

Our protein bars in this market would provide more nutrition for the people lacking in that and also would allow them to donate a bar while feeding themselves, with our buy one donate one business model.

Cricket protein is one of the most sustainable protein sources and compared to beef it has 30% more protein it also takes around 1,800 gallons of water to produce one pound of meat while it only takes 1 gallon for every pound of cricket protein.

Global Protein Developments: What are the Implications for the Meat Industry? | The Pig Site

As our population grows there is a higher demand for protein and sustainable protein. We are on the edge of climate disaster and one of the main causes of this is the way we farm for our food. This increase in demand for unsustainable farming practices needs to be combated with our more sustainable cricket model.

Our mission is to be a more sustainable company and provide high-quality protein to people in need. We achieved this using local insect farms providing more sustainable and healthy protein using cricket flowers. We are starting in countries that need food or more nutrition and we hope to expand to other countries. In conclusion, this is a highly sustainable solution for many problems, it is also a very scalable business model and has the potential to add more revenue streams like the idea we were given at innovation night to give farms to 3rd world country’s and then buy back the farmed crickets. Our idea has many social aspects and would be a viable business model.

BLOG #4

Our business model will outperform most others because we have a lot cheaper sources of protein (cricket flower). A regular amount of protein from a cow requires about 1,800 gallons of water a cricket is one gallon for every pound of crickets. much more sustainable for the environment and cost-wise. We will also implement a website that will show our beneficiaries how much food they have donated to other countries and will get discounts on bulk orders after a certain amount of purchases, this will help to keep our customers satisfied with their purchases and to help attract them to make another purchase. every time we sell a bar US we donate one in a 3rd world country but our cost margins can still handle this we have also implemented ads on the bars to make sure we can keep this policy going and still have gross profit.

We are different from other companies because we will have superior taste and quality for cheaper. We can sell cheaper because we will outsource our cricket flowers to be made in other countries where it is cheaper to make the cricket farms. Our taste will be better because it will be a simpler blend which will hopefully taste higher quality. In the US, our target market segment is going to include people who want a very high amount of protein in their bars and this is another thing we will be better at compared to other brands. One of our biggest competitors is Exo Protein bars but this bar only offers 14g of protein which is a very small amount compared to our goal of around 25g – 35g. We will use a blend filled with simple carbs which will offset the vast amount of protein that we plan to stuff in this bar. Simple carbs are also helpful in replenishing your body with energy this will make our bars good for post and pre-workout.

Micro-Entereprise Reflection

What have you accomplished so far?

We have designed a viable business model with a low cost per unit business model that means we need to sell high volume.

What has worked well?

Our advertisement for the product has been ok, but we need to do a lot more work on it, maybe making posters or another school email. We also have not put them in the school store yet so we don’t know any actual numbers yet.

What has not worked well?

Losing one of our key members who was supposed to design the stickers and was also one of the founders of the idea. Also our design was supposed to be the main attractive feature drawing in customers.

What has surprised you?

I feel like regardless of our lost team member we have persevered and put in the extra work to try to make it work. We still have a solid idea and a possibly lucrative business model.

How much did you spend to get started?

$36 low starting price.

How many sales have you realized?

From our google survey we have 15 potential sales and I think we have built some interest around the product.

If you have not yet been successful selling your product, what adjustments will you make in the final week?

We have had the suggestion to reach out to an art student and ask for a new design but I’m not sure about the timeline of that idea given that it almost took a week for the product to arrive last time we ordered it. I think the next step is to advertise the product with papers around campus and tell people where to buy it.

Cricket Protein Bars

Our main goal is to provide a cheap and affordable source of sensible proteins to people in developing countries and at an increased price for people in more developed countries. We will make these protein bars cheap because of the ads we put on them. These ads will also be focused on health and other informational statements.

The target market will be people interested in sustainability who also want to be healthy. As we know there is more than enough food to go around but still 783 million people are still going hungry. A lot of the food we produce releases methane (CO2) into our atmosphere which is helping to increase our global temperature. This is mainly caused by cows, chicken and pigs which are our main sources of protein. This method also takes a lot of water to produce. It takes 500 gallons of water to produce one pound of chicken and 2,000 for one pound of beef. Wail crickets only need one gallon of water. They get most of their food and water from potatoes which are a lot more sustainable to grow compared to the corn which we feed our cows. This corn we feed our cows also contributes to these cows getting sick which makes it necessary to give them vaccines which makes the meat lease healthy for humans.

If we used crickets on the other hand we would be using less water and a more sustainable source of food for them at a fraction of the amount we would need to generate that amount of protein in cow or chicken meat.

San Francisco vs South Africa

Education

In San Francisco and the bay area 88% of the population graduated highschooler, and 45% get their bachelors or higher.

Just 6% of the South African population have graduated university while a new report by the Higher Education Department has says just 6% had diplomas and 3.4% held technical and vocational education and training (TVET) certificates.

Health care

In San Francisco the average person probably has health care. In 2010 90% of San Francisco enrolled in the healthy San Francisco program that had 50,000 people. San Francisco is also pretty wealthy so a lot of people can afford private health care.

almost 72 % of family’s in south Africa said they would use public hospitals before consulting a private doctor. while 27% said they would go to a private doctor according to 2021 studies.

Life expectancy

San Francisco has some of the highest life expectancy in the nation with a whopping 80.9 years and nearby San Jose even the poorer residents live 81.6 years. This still depends on how wealthy you are but the average is still incredibly high.

South Africa is ranked number 178th in the world with a average life expectancy of only 62.89 years. While men only have a average life 59.85 years and women 65.69 years. the infant mortality rate is 26.8 die for every 1,000 born.

Income

The average household has an income of over 200,0000 dollars per year which is insanely high. With the main jobs being tech and science the bar is set high, even people 25 years old and younger earn around 91,000 dollars per year.

The average amount per capita that south Africans make per year is around 9,338 per year. There biggest expense is housing with over 18% of south Africans salary going to that expense. When you compare than to the USA’s average witch is 30,490 per year that separation starts to get perspective. when you compare that to San Francisco 200,000 per year, you start to realize how vast that gap is between this 3rd world developing country’s and some parts of the us.
