Last week, our class took a field trip to the Dartmouth Regional Technology Center to look into entrepreneurial start-up companies such as MVP LLC and SmartAir Sensor LLC.

MVP, Mobil Virtual Player LLC is a company that has developed a method to improve football practices while reducing the number of injuries from tackling. The MVP is a lithium battery powered self-righting dummy-like device that can be used to simulate another player, eliminating one on one contact. The main cause of injury in the football league is contact related, and generally located around the head causing concussions and brain injuries.

The MVP is currently captained by John Currier with Ryan McManus, Elliot Kastner, and Quinn Connell.

After seeing the mechanical dummy in action, we asked a few questions about price and environmental impact. One of the dummies costs about $8,500 and last about 3-4 years. The impact on the environment is something they are currently in the process of looking into to try and reduce while cutting down production costs. Each MVP has a 3-year and are starting to make their ways into the ivy league practice routine.

FreshAirir LLC is a company focussed on improving the enjoyment and comfort by detecting toxins in the air. This device that had an initial focus on marijuana and cigarette smoke in rooms such as hotel or dorm rooms. The wifi and Bluetooth activated sensor reports condition of the air back to the FreshAir company and notifies the customer with alerts when air levels change. For example, the program can detect smoking in hotel rooms and they are even close to creating a model that detects e-cigarette and Juul. When an event of smoke detection is over, the customer immediately receives a chart showing measurements of the substance detected. With FreshAir, they offer a notification system to monitor if someone is smoking in an unauthorized area.
